About the Legends of the Grail Series

The Goddess tradition was almost lost, but the imaginal world maintains a record of all that ever was – if we can access it. At a time when the Earth is in crisis, we need poetry, stories and art that reminds us how to live in harmony and balance with the land again. It makes our hearts glad to know that some Celtic tribes, and even pre-Celtic tribes, celebrated men and women equally. The dance of the feminine and masculine invites fertility and abundance, a culture of life, in which we all thrive. Of course, we need to choose which strands of wisdom we take with us into the future, but knowing our roots can give us strength and dignity. It takes skill, bravery and patience to re-weave the strands of a broken lineage. The challenge in the Legends of the Grail Series has been to research and then to deeply feel and intuit stories of Goddesses & Heroines, bringing them forth with fresh voices and insights. It has taken thirty-five years of dedication, and yet two strands of the necklace of the Great Goddess are with us again!

The first book in the series is called Legends of the Grail: Stories of Celtic Goddesses. Each book can stand alone, and yet when combined as a series our cup becomes filled with myths and legends dating as far back as 10,000 years.

1st Book in the Legends of the Grail Series: Stories of Celtic Goddesses

In times of yore, their presence was seen and felt everywhere in the Natural World…They spun the moon, made flowers grow and springs gush forth. They were the natural allies of the both animals and man. They had the magical powers that created whole peoples, and brought forth light. But they were often undermined, under attack and coveted by powerful figures and forces…And yet they rose strong and powerful, even when it required great sacrifice. They were the Celtic Goddesses and Heroines whose stories have been kept alive for hundreds—if not thousands–of years, and who have inspired women throughout the ages to seek and take sustenance from the Divine Feminine, to nurture themselves and their feminine essence in the light cast by these figures. And to honor the balance of nature.

Now, Ayn Cates Sullivan, PhD, has brought them to life for this generation, capturing their stories on the page in two remarkable award-winning and highly acclaimed books, Heroines of Avalon & Other Tales and Legends of the Grail: Stories of Celtic GoddessesWith a Masters and Doctorate in Literature  from Columbia University and King’s College London, Sullivan actually walked the British Isles and Ireland to reclaim the stories that she has assembled in her “Legends of the Grail” series, The Grail being defined as the Divine Feminine. Says Sullivan, “The ‘Legends of the Grail’ collection is written to inspire and empower the contemporary reader who wishes to remember how to live harmoniously with the Earth.”

In each book, she brings forth the story of a goddess or a heroine, oftentimes speaking from the legend’s own voice. Sullivan offers that goddess or heroine’s place in the historical mythology, her cultural and religious significance, her special gifts, and the mystical elements associated with her — colors, trees, animals and rituals. There are also guided meditations specifically designed to call forth that figure’s protection, essence and empowering qualities, so that the modern day woman can embody and strengthen her own spirit. The stories are engaging and fun. You will feel like you are sitting around the fire listening to the female elders of your community passing along these legends just for you. Each story is unique to its Irish, Welsh, Scottish or British origins, with the most recent volume focusing on heroines associated with King Arthur, Glastonbury and Avalon. Go with Ayn Cates Sullivan, dip your toe in her ancient mystical world for a few hours, and experience wisdom and inspiration for today’s woman therein.

This audio is a MP3 file of Ayn reading “The Shapeshifter” arising out of an ancient Irish story of Brigid and the Cailleach. It is followed by a healing Visualization and light transmission with Mirabai Devi. This story is part of the Legends of the Grail series.

December, 2017

Once in a great while, a book of profound insight comes along disguised as a collection of stories about magic. Joseph Campbell penetrated the familiar great world myths to reveal an incredibly rich and complex psychological reality in the lives we live, and thus made magic itself live again with both urgency and relevance. In her beautifully written and illustrated book, Legends of the Grail: Stories of Celtic Goddesses, Ayn Cates Sullivan, Ph.D. brings similar urgency and relevance to the psychological reality behind the Goddess within each human psyche. Her book, however, is not simply an academic rendering of a living spiritual principle. Dr. Sullivan offers something much more subtle, rich, and ultimately satisfying. She offers her audience a viable passage into their own personal mythic journey, with the healing consequences thus implied.

Legends of the Grail does indeed tell stories of Celtic goddesses, but Ayn Cates Sullivan also layers and enriches these stories of ancient Irish myths with vital background information robed with historical importance, with first-person stories told by each chosen Goddess to establish accessible resonance, with symbolic revelations for present-day applications, meditations, and visualizations allowing intimate contact with the Goddess herself. The author includes personal practical suggestions for utilizing the archetypal values embedded symbolically and firmly in the specified Goddess in order to facilitate psychological revival and continued health, and finally a poetic blessing to access the less structured but higher nature of the human mind. Dr. Sullivan accomplishes all this with concise and polished writing that appears deceptively simple, as all captivating stories do, but do not be misled – the Goddess calls.

“With a title like Legends of the Grail who can refuse? The title alone conjures in my imagination the great stuff legends are made of, adventure, love, and, of course, a quest. This quest is one of rediscovering the grail, the holy chalice, the female. In Legends of the Grail, the author, Ayn Cates Sullivan, takes her reader into the world before convention, before organized religion, even before time itself. Ayn shares her stories with us which are imbued with rich tales and deep wisdom. Page after page there is something of value and something to reflect on. As a woman, through these stories, the author helps me feel a bit more rooted and complete. Lost have the stories of the female been, often times overshadowed by stories of the man, until now. Thank you Ayn for bringing back some of our stories in such a soulful, insightful and respectful way. Reading these stories is like reading a part of my history I never knew. These stories allow me to experience the power, strength, and magnificence we all are inside.”

— Jennifer Chapman Sendzimir, Teacher, Tennesse, USA

“Extraordinary! A tapestry of the writer’s gold is woven with legend, mystery, poem, prayer, history and myth! What Irish Goddesses of the far distance past can bring forth to this age is wisdom that is much needed for these times we’re in, the sacredness of nature and our communion with all life. We need to bring the honoring of the Goddess and the feminine insight into life itself. Legends of the Grail is a treasure to be savored as a sacred trust from ancient times
to be shared with us now!”

– Bruce L. Erickson, Teacher, Santa Barbara, CA, USA

“Reading Legends of the Grail is like being taken by the hand and shown stories. The book is delightful and beautifully illustrated, reminding us of the mothering and nurturing that we seem to be losing. The stories invite us to remember the gentleness, love, and also the strength that women have needed throughout history. There is a twist with the Goddess herself telling the story, which gives old tales new life. It’s a book to remind us to be human Beings rather than human doings. A wonderful book; inspiring, captivating and beautifully written.”

– Patsy Westworth, Nurse, Devon, UK
